The Project is a cooperation between PTT and The Biodiversity Research and Training Program (BRT) to conduct area-based research under management approach adopting multidisciplinary research. The program has a main focus on adoption of multidisciplinary sciences from different facets and dimensions which will lead to holistic knowledge. The research result is expected to render management approach beneficial for local communities. These will be in various forms; for instance, local product manufacture, ecotourism products, local study curriculum as well as learning process of both academics and local people which will result in strengthening community in the long term.
Thong Pha Phum : Area-Based Project
PTT has undertaken the project to conserve and maintain an area of 30,000 rai (1,200 acres) of forest area along the right of way of Thai-Myanmar Pipeline, Huay Khayeng, Thong Pha Phumi, Kanchanaburi Province according to EIA requirements. Through the cooperation between PTT and the Biodiversity Research and Training Program, the research is on a biodiversity in a target zone. The research outcome will enable the public to gain better understanding and take part in maintaining and reviving the reforested area and environment in the locality in a sustainable manner. The first phase of the project was from 2002-2004.
Under the framework of the project, PTT and BRT specified the research guideline to reap the utmost benefit in community and knowledge development in three areas. The tasks consist of:
Community and youth development
PTT
Research and knowledge development
BRT
PTT and BRT agreed to continue the cooperation and launched the second phase of the research from 2005-2007 with an aim to utilize the research result and community development to apply in management of local knowledge base. The purpose of the project is to enhance of capabilities of the communities to enable them to be self-reliant along the sustainable road. Furthermore, this will allow new cooperation through the working process with BRT reflecting our continued commitment of PTT in being a responsible unit towards society, community and environment.
An Integrated Biodiversity Research,Education & Management : (A Case Study In- Kharom-Khaonan Model)
Following the success of the biodiversity research on 30,000 rai area in the Thong Pha Phumi Project, PTT has then further conducted Bio-resource management from the coast to the mountain: from Had Khanom to Kao Nan (Nan Mountain), Nakorn Sri Thammarat Province in which PTT’s Gas Separation Plant Unit IV is located. The three-year research from 2006 to 2008 requires a budget of Baht 25 million which are sponsored by both parties.
This research begins a new era to the area-based research demonstrating an ability to combine core knowledge and the sustainable development for the conservation of natural resources to create knowledge-base of bio-resources from seashore to mountain, which has never been done before in Thailand. It also involves the study of interrelationship between the community and biological resources in the area with the cooperation from community network that encompasses all necessary areas.
The research consists of two sub projects:
