PTT Group Mobilizes Expertise to Support Healthcare Workers in Fighting COVID-19 to Overcome All Obstacles with All Thais

21 April 2020

Today (21 April 2020), Mr. Chansin Treenuchagron, President and  Chief Executive Officer, PTT Public Company Limited (PTT) disclosed that as COVID-19 cases have increased, PTT Group by PTT, PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited, Thaioil Public Company Limited, PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited, IRPC Public Company Limited, Global Power Synergy Public Company Limited and PTT Oil and Retail Public Company Limited (OR), realize the need to resolve the problem and thus join hands to actively fight covid-19 in many ways as possible.

It is vital that engineering and technology expertise be deployed to assist and support healthcare workers in conducting the research, developing, procuring and producing sufficient medical equipment, as well as urgently providing alcohol to support public health agencies. The priorities include supplying disposable gowns made from PTT Group plastic pellets, production of water and secretion resistant spunbond fabric, personal protective equipment, positive air pressure respirator (PAPR), negative pressure patient beds to prevent spread of infections, preventive diagnostic chambers, and anti-dispersion boxes for the medical procedure of healthcare workers and face shields. The Group has been given support from networking parties such as Siam Commercial Bank, Department of Medical Sciences, Ministry of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, together with Vidyasirimedhi Institute of Science and Technology (VISTEC) in conducting the research on the development of high-performance COVID-19 testing kits for genetic material detection. The equipment has continuously been distributed to hospitals and public health organizations across the country. Some are in the process and will be gradually handed over to those in need.

The supply of alcohol is indeed vital. As the cleaning alcohol excise tax for those ethanol plants normally selling it as fuel is already exempted by the Excise Department PTT, which does not have its own ethanol plant, has then accelerated the supply of alcohol to medical agencies and hospitals. It has supplied the item to 170 places nationwide, including medical agencies affiliated with the Ministry of Public Health, medical colleges, including hospitals under the Royal Thai Army, Royal Thai Navy and Royal Thai Air Force, some of which have also opened field hospitals. In addition, free alcohol gels and clean alcohol for sale at production cost are distributed at OR stations. They are also provided to hospitals throughout the country. A total of alcohol supply from PTT Group is over 160,000 liters. PTT has also provided additional medical alcohol to support energy projects to fight COVID-19 together with the Ministry of Energy and Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand to more than 9,863 sub-district health promotion hospitals and community health facilities nationwide. Donations to purchase medical equipment are made, while medicines, related medical supplies, and face masks from fabrics were given to the elderly at the elderly social welfare development centers nationwide to help prevent the spread of the disease, as they are very vulnerable to infection.

In addition to urgently needed medical equipment, PTT Group is also developing other equipment needed to support the mission of healthcare workers who treat the patients infected with COVID-19.  To achieve this important mission, it has formed a Social Activity Committee to fight COVID-19 of the Group to effectively implement the program for concrete result. PTT also reduces the people burden through the reduction of retail NGV prices for public vehicle group with discount card at the rate of 3 Baht per kilogram. The retail price for public vehicle is thus THB 10.62 per kilogram (excluding local tax) for 3 months from  April 1 to June 30, 2020, while the NGV price for general vehicle is at THB 15.31/kg from March 16 to August 15, 2020.

"Concurrently, PTT Group continues its important mission of ensuring that people have sufficient energy in times of crisis, especially the system relating to natural gas as it is the main fuel used in electricity generation, the feedstock for the petrochemical industry and fuel for vehicle and industrial plants”, Mr. Chansin said.
