PTT & EGAT to Study and Develop Southern LNG Receiving Facilities for Thai Energy Security

PTT Public Company Limited (PTT) and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) signed a cooperation agreement on LNG receiving facilities to support LNG imports in the southern region according to PDP 2018 plan to enhance Thai energy security.  

 
Mr. Chansin Treenuchagron, President and Chief Executive Officer, PTT Public Company Limited (PTT), Mr. Viboon Rerksirathai, Governor of Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), two main state-owned enterprises of the country with a mission to build energy security signed a cooperation agreement to study investment opportunities in infrastructure to support the import of liquefied natural gas or LNG receiving facilities for the storage and gasification of LNG in southern regions to support the policies and strategies of the government and the Ministry of Energy.  

 
Mr. Chansin Treenuchagron, President and Chief Executive Officer, PTT revealed that according to the country's electricity capacity development plan, the new PDP 2018, which comprises the southern power plants that use natural gas as the main fuel, PTT and EGAT have begun joint studies on the possibility of LNG receiving facilities to transport natural gas to EGAT power plants. The signing today synergizes both organizations’ expertise and experience in energy supply and management as well as supplying, producing and distributing electricity to mutually enhance the country's energy security.  
 
Mr. Viboon Rerksirathai, Governor of the EGAT, said today's agreement is an important step towards the cooperation enhancement of the two organizations so that people can be confident that the country's energy security is maintained. The planned power plants in southern Thailand include: Khanom Power Plant (Nakhon Si Thammarat) of EGAT with a capacity to generate 930 megawatts; Surat Thani Power Plant Unit 1 - 2, generating 1,400 megawatts (commercial operation date (COD) in 2037 and 2039) ;and new power plants (COD in 2035), generating 700 megawatts. Collaboratively, EGAT and PTT have thus studied the LNG receiving facilities construction project to support LNG imports and to ensure the country's electricity security in the future.
