- The death toll in China from the coronavirus climbed above 1,000 on Monday, amidst a warning from the World Health Organisation (WHO) that the spread of cases outside China could be "the spark that becomes a bigger fire." On Monday, Hubei province, the epicentre of the outbreak, reported 103 deaths – the most in any single day so far. There are now over 42,000 confirmed cases in China as well as 319 cases in 24 other countries, including one death.
- China’s 2nd-largest refiner PetroChina will reduce its processing of crude oil by 320,000 bpd this month in response to lower fuel demand resulting from the coronavirus, Reuters reported on Monday citing an official at the firm. This cut works out to about 10% of PetroChina’s average run rate of around 3.32 mil bpd. With PetroChina’s cuts, the total production by China’s Big-3 state-owned refiners – the others being Sinopec Corp and China National Offshore Oil Company – will be decreased by around 940,000 bpd in February. Sinopec Corp – Asia's largest refiner – is cutting its throughput this month by 600,000 bpd, or 12% of its average crude runs.
